I have read many books on the subject of sustainable business, and there are many more that are on my “to-do list.” Nevertheless, here are my top 5 favorite books on sustainable business in no particular order:
Interested in sustainable business, but have no idea where to begin? Let’s start by defining sustainability. The most commonly used definition for sustainability is from the 1987 Brundtland Commission who defined ‘sustainable development’ as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs.” The idea of ensuring that future generations will be able to ‘meet their own needs’ is crucial because it would be short-sighted and selfish to only safeguard one’s own generation’s ability to meet its needs.
At Emerger Strategies, we’re aware that climate change, if left unchecked, will have major effects on the communities in which we operate, our business, and the economy at large. We are also aware that climate change is already having negative impacts on our fisheries. That’s why we’re joining more than 620 companies and investors across the United States to encourage the incoming administration and new Congress to stick with the commitments we’ve made in the Paris Climate Agreement. Failure to transition toward a low-carbon US economy now will only exacerbate the climate-related problems we’ll experience in the future. But maintaining U.S. climate leadership can spur innovation, advance our nation’s competitiveness, and position U.S. companies as leaders in the global economy.
No matter the size of your business, social media is a powerful tool that can be used to drastically increase brand awareness. Social media is so powerful because never before has the world been so interconnected. In fact, according to the World Economic Forum, it is estimated that by 2018 there will be 2.44 billion people using social networks. This presents a massive opportunity to increase brand awareness to a large audience interested in connecting with brands that align with their interests and values.
A new year and clean slate! I love the hope and optimism associated with ringing in a new year. I also love taking the time to reflect. 2016 was a great year for Emerger Strategies. We landed our first client, Flood Tide Company, and are working with them to minimize their environmental footprint while enhancing their brand and increasing their profitability. We also partnered with The Sustainability Institute so that we can work towards a more sustainable community in Charleston, SC.
